You feel something on your shoulder gently shaking you, waking you up. When you do, you see Klaymen next to you with a smile on his face.
“Good morning, Lattice.” he says quietly. Lattice? You sound it out, thinking it's another word that he wants you to know, even though you have no idea what it is or means.
“Oops!” Klaymen says, now putting his hand to his mouth. “I've been calling you “Lattice” whenever I talk to Hoborg. I should've waited until you're better at talking so you could choose your name.”
You're name? That didn't even cross your mind in the time you've been alive. Lattice. You like the sound of it, but you also didn't want Klaymen to feel bad for naming you before you had a proper chance to talk. You sound the name out again and again, while at the same time trying to figure out what else to add. The whole time, you see your green stems in your peripheral vision, and you think maybe you can come up with a temporary name for now.
“Lat...t...tice.........Stem.........ly.” you say. You think that it'll do for now, believing that you can always change your name later. Klaymen is looking a little confused.
“You want your name to be “Stemly”?” he asks. You shake your head.
“L-Lattice.....Stemly” you say again, a little surprised at how well you said it this time. Klaymen's eyes widen.
“Oh, you want your name to be “Lattice Stemly”?” he asks. You nod.
“M......my..........n-n-name.........is........La...Lattice...Stemly.” you say. Klaymen is now smiling the biggest smile you've seen and is looking like he's going to cry again. He then gives you a very strong hug and lifts you off of your legs.
“Your first sentence!” he says, swinging you back and forth. “Oh, Lattice, I'm so proud of you!” You start giggling. You're talking! You're really talking! Sure it's only a sentence, but you're actually speaking!
You see Willie and Dalia enter the room as Klaymen was putting you down. You're still giggling as Klaymen tells the others your name and the fact that you're talking now. Willie cheers and gives you a hug himself. Dalia is smiling and gives you a hug with one arm, as she's carrying a basket with the other. As you're hugging her, you see what's in the basket and suddenly you feel cold again.
Dalia's basket was carrying the red mangles faces you saw last night! You jump back and run into Klaymen, terrified and confused.
“What's wrong?” Dalia says, coming closer to you with both of her arms reaching out to you and bringing the faces even closer.
You scream and run into the farthest corner of the room and hide your head under the blanket. You're shaking and sobbing uncontrollably now, terrified of the fact that the faces are in the room with you. You hear Klaymen come closer to you and feel him put his arms around you as he tries calming you down. You peek out from behind the blanket and see Willie and Dalia, looking worried and sad. You then see the basket of mangled faces and hide yourself under the blanket again with a yelp. They're not talking at all, but they're every bit as mangled and hideously malformed as they were last night.
“What's going on?” you then hear a deep voice say.
“I don't know, Hoborg.” you hear Klaymen say. You hear footsteps coming closer to you, then see Hoborg as he pulls the blanket away from your face. He's motioning you to come closer to him and you feel Klaymen let go of you. You go over to Hoborg and put your head on his chest. He, in turn, puts his arms around you and is holding you firmly but gently.
“What's the matter, little one?” he asks, patting the back of your head. It takes a while before you can give any sort of answer. Unable to talk at that moment, you try pointing at the basket.
“Me?” says Dalia sounding even sadder. You shake your head and begin crying. You can't help yourself, nor can you stop yourself. Hoborg is now giving you a firmer hug. Long moments pass before you can control your crying a little.
“Dalia,” starts Hoborg, “What do you have in the basket?”
“Flowers from my garden.” you hear her answer. “Roses, specifically. I thought that she might like them.”
Those mangled faces are supposed to be flowers?! They're hideous! Horrible! How anyone can see those things as remotely nice is beyond you. They didn't need to speak, they're still horrific! You start shaking again in Hoborg's arms.
“I don't think she likes them, dear.” says Hoborg. This breaks your heart, you don't want to hate anything, certainly not anything Dalia's brought over. But you can't help it, the faces are too terrible. You start crying again.
“I'm so sorry, Lattice!” you hear Dalia say, then feel her hand on your shoulder. When you calm down, you look to see her face. She looks like she is about to cry along with you. You spot the basket of mangled faces on the floor next to Willie and shiver.
“I'm...sor...sorry.” you say.
“No, don't be!” says Dalia. “I didn't know that you wouldn't like them. Willie, can you take the roses back to my house, please?”
“Sure. Ouch! Prickles pointy!” you hear Willie say. You then hear footsteps leaving the room. You feel another hand on your other shoulder.
“You're going to be okay, Lattice.” you hear Klaymen say.
There is a long silence. You hear Willie come back into the room, but that is the only thing you hear before the room goes silent again. Finally, Klaymen breaks the silence.
“Maybe we should wait a little more before showing her the rest of the Neverhood.” he says. You don't know if he's talking to Hoborg specifically or everyone in the room, but you protest before you can control yourself.
“N-n-no!” you say, then try to say more. “I......I w-w........wa.....n...t......to......s-see.......the...the......N-n-nev..........Never.....hood!” There is another long silence before Hoborg started to speak.
“Then let's go see it.” he says. Slowly, he lets go of you and you take off your blanket to carry it.
“Are you going to be okay?” Klaymen asks. You look at him and nod. “If your sure.” he says again. You nod again.
“Why don't the three of you go on ahead?” Hoborg then says. “We'll catch up.” With that, Klaymen, Willie and Dalia start leaving the room. You try following them, but start tripping over the blanket.
“Careful.” says Hoborg, keeping you steady. Dalia turns around and sees you tripping over your blanket again, then calls out to Klaymen and Willie.
“I'll be with you guys in a minute.” she says, then goes over to you. “I have an idea.” she says. She takes one end of the blanket and wraps behind your shoulder then takes the rest of your blanket, wraps it around your other shoulder, then your waist and tucks it behind your back. “That's better! Now you're not tripping on it.” she chirps again.
You're now wearing your blanket instead of carrying it. Your hands are free and Hoborg offers you his arm to escort you out of the room. You take his arm and follow Dalia. The three of you now enter a light blue room and descend a flight of stairs. You look behind you and see that the stairs behind you molds itself into the wall after you crossed it. Hoborg draws your attention back in front of you and you see Klaymen, Willie and Dalia at the doorway. You look at Hoborg.
“Go ahead.” he says, and lets go of your arm.
You look back ahead of you and start walking toward the doorway. You walk past Klaymen, Willie and Dalia and through the door. Immediately, you're overwhelmed by your surroundings; the ground is green and had a swirl pattern, there's a tree in front of you to your left and your right has two buildings, one white with green slime and one with purple curls all over it's surface. You hear the commotion around you and see the many other people around you. You fall to your knees and start to weep, this is more beautiful than you imagine. You hear someone running up to you and feel a hand placed on your back.
“Are you okay?” you hear Klaymen ask. You turn to him and smile. You say what you wanted to say since you were a life seed and now know for sure that is true.
